Surging across the solar system from the sun, the solar wind carries charged particles that strike the planets, on Earth causing aurora, radio blackouts and, just occasionally, wreaking havoc with satellites and the electrical grid.

It waxes and wanes and, so far, has defied attempts to predict it—attempts that are getting ever more important as our technological society looks increasingly vulnerable to a once-in-a-century “black swan event” like a solar superstorm.

Such an event could destroy technology including satellites, internet cables, long-distance power lines and transformers.

The only reason I am posting this is to post a comment sent to me regarding this post. The don't call NASA 'NEVER A STRAIGHT ANSWER' for a reason. The comment is this:

I can't believe that people believe this shite....soooo, solar flares from the Sun that reach Earth can knock out all electricity and communications...but a puny probe can get close enough to film solar wind and it does just fine...and I still can't figure out how these thangs can transmit data back to Earth, supposedly bypassing space debris, the Kupiter belt, etc. But I can't get a signal in the mountains...I know, I always bitch about this crap. It really annoys me...all fake science does...ARRRGGG
