Amazing Polly was amazed at the reach of media management and manipulation in Canada. This has been going on a long time. Government relations began with Paul Hellyer's former assistant Bill Lee. Later, Paul Desmarais of Power Corporation funded the leadership campaigns of four Canadian Prime Ministers--all from his province of Quebec. Pierre Trudeau and Brian Mulroney were two of them, and they both served on the board of Power Corp after their political careers were done. Desmarais' son married Jean Chretien's daughter. Paul Martin became his VP in 1974 and Martin bought Canada Steamship Lines in a sweetheart deal in 1981. That's 40 years of Quebec prime ministers. He also had connections to Nicolas Sarkozy in France. After Desmarais died, George H W Bush called him "a point of light," presumably out of the "thousand points of light" that Bush referred to in his speeches, and that H.G. Wells talked about in the 1920s.
