Let's do the arithmetic.

Positive pressure ventilation (ppv) forces air into the lungs. Ppv is the exact opposite of negative pressure ventilation (npv) (breathing or iron lung device). Npv creates a vacuum in the lungs which pulls air in under negative pressure.

Ppv is workable as long as the lungs are reasonably healthy and free of excess fluid. It works by forcing pressurized air into the lungs to expand the rib cage. It looks like breathing but it is not. As long as air can reach the alveoli and undergo O2/CO2 exchange it's functional.

The lungs produce fluid when irritated by microbial infection, particulate matter, some gasses, etc.. When fluid cannot be coughed or expelled from flooded alveoli and increasingly larger air ways the mass of lung tissue progressively becomes the equivalent of a non-compressible semi-solid gel with hydraulic properties. If not remedied then eventually only the larger air ways will be open and only the surface of the lung mass bill be able to interact with fresh air. Sedation precludes natural reflexive expulsion of excess fluids from deep lung tissue. Mechanical removal of fluid is only possible from the largest of the air ways as infection thickens fluids and they will not drain freely from smaller air ways and alveoli. A mass of gelled tissue sealed against penetration by air is the end result.

Forced air pressure against the sealed lung surface will convert to hydraulic pressure through the gelled lung mass to force the rib cage to expand. Again, it looks like breathing but is exactly the opposite. Hydraulic pressure within the gelled lung mass impedes capillary circulation which in turn produces oxygen deprivation. Impeded circulation and O2 deprivation exacerbate microbial damage as well as impair immune accessibility and delivery of medications. Lung tissue mortality begins. It can take days for the spiral into biological death to complete by slow suffocation.

Imagine, if you will, that you are somewhat aware of your surroundings. It seems that there are people around you. Your body is experiencing anxiety and terror because it knows that it is dying but you cannot signal it's distress to those around. The body is sedated, paralyzed. It cannot move to save itself and you cannot change that.

Thoughts present themselves with a strange and surreal clarity against this backdrop of the organism striving with all remaining might against inevitable defeat and darkness.

You had heard that Trump failed to provide the necessary ventilators for the tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of victims who would surely die without them. You had agreed that this charge of unnecessary death should be laid at his feet as indictment for willful failure to protect people.

You vaguely recall that Medicare would pay $39,000 to hospitals and personnel for those who died on respirators while valiant efforts were made to save them.

You realize with a freezing horror that your body is being killed by that device which you believed would save it.

And then the arithmetic brings it's bitter numbness. You are nothing more than a trivial sacrifice on the political alter. Those whom you chose to trust have sold you to the renderer for a pissy $39,000. They were not trying to save you, they intended to murder you as a statistic to oust the man who was trying to save you from them. Trump didn't procure thousands of ventilators because he knew the mind of the murderers. He told you it was not serious but you preferred hysteria to reason. And now you don't even get to live with that choice.
