Possible sex ed changes at the kindergarten level outrages parents

Las Vegas, NV (KTNV) -- Monday's Clark County School District Board of Trustees meeting was met with a packed room of angry parents who recently discovered possible updates to the district's sex education curriculum, which could teach kids as young as five-years-old about topics like masturbation.

"We certainly should not be teaching five-year-olds that masturbation and pleasuring one's body is good and that a 12-year-old should know about the very details of anal and oral sex," said one parent.

Another followed with, "Words can not even begin to describe my shock when I read what is being suggested to be taught to my daughter at age 5 [or 6]."

Another appalled parent told the crowd that a section of the proposals teaches kids that abortion is safe, which she did not necessarily agree with.

The proposals are derived from the Guidelines for Comprehensive Sexuality Education, published by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States.

CCSD high school student Chloe Davis said, "I think I went through about 20 pages and I couldn't continue with it because some of the stuff was just too disturbing to me at the age that I am and I'm 17-years-old."

The night was also met with opposition from those who say the district is allowing students to proceed in ignorance, which can backfire.

"I received sex education in 8th grade and 10th grade. In 8th grade I was taught little to nothing. I entered it as a sexual assault survivor and was told that if I did not wait to have sex until marriage, that I was impure and vile and it was not an okay thing," said CCSD student Caitlyn Caruso.

"We currently have the 7th highest teen pregnancy rate in the country and our current curriculum is failing our students," added Sara Lemma with the CCSD Sex Education Advisory Committee.

Currently, the district has an opt-in policy where parents give consent to allow their students to study sex education. The new proposal is considering an opt-out policy instead.

District leaders say the proposals will continue to be discussed with parents at upcoming advisory meetings, then they'd have to be adopted by state lawmakers during the 2015 Legislative session. If adopted, the earliest the changes could take effect would be July of 2015.

A representative with the district says the next meeting with the advisory committee will be held in November.
