Because of Clif High's work I've been paying more attention to words, their meaning and origin. Along those lines, the other day Amazing Polly had a video that brought up the term Shibboleth.

From Merriam-Webster, "a word or saying used by adherents of a party, sect, or belief and usually regarded by others as empty of real meaning". In other words, you don't know what their keywords are, so you don't know the meaning they have for that word.

Which brings me to a discussion I had yesterday with a major car company. My car's engine blew at 60000 miles. The same component that had been subject to a recall and replaced on the vehicle at 13,000 miles months before I bought it 2 years ago. I'm going down the highway at 60 miles an hour on a four lane and every light on the dashboard comes on. Check Engine, airbags, everything, a frigging Christmas tree. But the engine RPM's, engine, lights, cruise, all AOK. Nothing appears to be mechanically wrong. I go to the dealer, they say it's not in danger of failing, use an app on my phone for a speedometer, which has since failed, our first appointment is a month from now. Nobody else can read their frigging software to get an error code. My local certified mechanic whose worked on my cars for years says only the dealer can read it.

Long story shorter, I'm second owner, my dealership didn't do the repair so won't warranty it, big mess. So I call the manufacturer, get a great customer service rep, somehow we both drove Pintos back in the day which was a really similar feel to how my current car drove in stance and wheelbase. So I'm asking what they can do for me after a long conversation, she says there's really nothing she can do but document my case, and put it in the proverbial pile. We're talking a little bit more and I say "lemon".

She stops me and says, "Because you said lemon I'm obligated to ask you to answer some more questions and fully document your case so it can be forwarded to our Escalation Team." Which is what I had asked her to do at the start of the conversation, but she couldn't because I hadn't said the magic word.

Shibboleth.

In this instance in my favor! Who knows what they'll come up with, but my guess is they'll tear it down and see what went wrong. My nephew is an Engineer at a manufacturer and he tells how they look for high mileage vehicles to see what went right, and also the anomalies like mine that blow up at 60000 miles.

So the moral of the story is; know the magic word!
