Lance once told me how to hide root crops from people looking to rob you blind during the tough times or wartimes. It was ingenious, really. Don't dig up your root crops. Leave them in the ground. Don't plant them all together, plant them at various places, or in a sunny area of the woods. Let the ground be your root cellar.

Most people buy their groceries at the store. All cleaned up and the greens on the top are removed. They don't know what they look like to a farmer while growing. Maybe onions, but little else. Potatoes, carrots, beets, turnips, onions, garlic, and sweet potatoes. A person could live off of these crops. The ground will protect much of it from frost. Or pile brush on top of the ground. Maybe put a layer of plastic under the mulch if it gets really cold.

If you don't have a few acres, plant them in a neighboring wooded area, or an overgrown area of your yard. Then watch the looters pass them by, thinking that they are just plants, or weeds, or a brush pile ..:-)
