There is no place truly safe in that event. That said, some places will be safer than others.

You do not want to be in a city of any significant size. Once the immediate supplies of fuel, food, and clean water run out, starvation and disease will run rampant, and people will turn on each other.

At that point, those who are able will fan out from the cities looking for whatever resources they can scavenge, without regard to laws or morals. Hello, zombie apocalypse.

Criteria for a safer place would be:

Well outside any major metro or suburban area, or any town larger than about 20,000. Ideally 100+ miles.

At least a 2-day walk away from any major transportation corridor (interstate highway, etc) especially one that leads to a major metro. That’s 20–40 miles at minimum.

A decent climate that won’t require you to expend a ton of energy keeping warm come wintertime, or roast you alive (or be too dry to grow food) in the summer.

The problem is that these types of areas tend to already be heavily populated.

Cascadia is one option, climate-wise but unless you get a fair ways up in the mountains, the population density is too high. Eastern Oregon tends to be full of Ruby Ridge types.
