Are you ready to make an appointment? Robot Performs World’s First Fully Automated Dental Procedure on a Human

I don't think that I would. Most of us are in fear of ultimate pain when visiting the dentist and handing the drill over to a robot that is going to do whatever it wants no matter how you react is more than scary. Anyway, here's the article about one potential feature of our coming brave new world from Thomas Industry Updates...

Robot Performs World’s First Fully Automated Dental Procedure on a Human

Advancements in AI, imaging, and robotics stand to redefine dentistry as we know it and Perceptive, a Boston-based startup, is developing a fully automated system that could extend better dental care to a large number of patients.

The company just reached an incredible milestone as it completed the first fully automated dental procedure in the world to use an AI-driven robot on a human patient.

Perceptive created a dental robotics system that uses AI-powered 3D imaging software and a robotic arm to perform dental procedures quickly and precisely. The proprietary system will first work on restorative dentistry patients, and the plan is to eventually complete procedures like crown placements in about 15 minutes. According to the company, current practices require two office visits that last at least one hour each.

Following the successful procedure, Perceptive Founder and CEO Dr. Chris Ciriello said the system will democratize access to more satisfactory dental care and enhance patient experience and clinical results.

Perceptive’s system uses 3D volumetric data for treatment and diagnostics planning to make an early and accurate diagnosis. The procedure starts with an OCT scan of the patient’s tooth and mouth. The handheld intraoral scanner takes 3D images from beneath the gum line and under the tooth surface.

According to German Galluicci, DMD, Ph.D., Chairman of Restorative Dentistry at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the scanner can detect cavities with an accuracy rate above 90%. The scanner is not only more accurate than 2D X-rays, which have a 40% accuracy, but it also doesn’t use ionizing radiation like traditional X-rays and CBCT scanners.

AI algorithms analyze the 3D data and plan the procedure. By automating these functions, dentists can diagnose and treat more patients faster, reducing manual labor and minimizing human error.

Some dentists believe Perceptive’s system will change dentistry as we know it, and the company has thus far raised $30 million. The system and scanner remain under development and have not yet been reviewed by FDA or other regulatory agencies.
