Guru Bawa used to talk about The Monkey Mind and The Dog of Desire. If you look more deeply into yourself... you can see how you are manipulated by this tandem. If you look even deeper... you can see who or what it is that manipulates them. The World is filled with sense objects... that sparkle and glitter... like the ornaments on a Christmas tree. In The Bhagavad Gita, Krishna mentions The Ashvattha Tree. It is very much like this Christmas tree. In Chapter 15 of The Gita, you can read about the tree.
We are advised to cut down this tree with the sharp axe of detachment. Then to find the path back... reversing the way we traveled into this world so very long ago. It seems that this Ashvattha Tree is the main obstruction... the primary sensory attractor, and... we are told that not only the gunas come from it, but also the spiritual scriptures as well. It's a one-stop shopping tree, is it not?
The scriptures are good though... yes? Well... that would be a relative truth. Once you have connected with the source itself... the scriptures are redundant. These days it seems that they are more focal points for argument than anything else; my God is better than your God. My God can beat up your God... yadda yadda... ♫Shabbat Shabbat... my baby woo... seems like a mighty long time♫ Where was I?
