I think the primary objective of them existing these days is economic expenditure for the masses. I mean, why coerce people into partying on this or that particular day? Why not random, like how I used to do when it was my thing and I had money to burn on what little discretionary time I had due to heavy O/T? The LAST thing I want is to compromise my space with the collective. In other words, stayed home that day, and spent NOTHING on any holidays for over 3 decades, and very little here and there before that.

I used Christmas as an excuse to get a friend something she needed once in my 20s, and another time to get a hilariously obnoxious coworker (who I did get along with) a box of chocolate with a bottle of Martinelli apple cidre with an embarrassing for all to see tag. (I recall one sales person at least was calling him Snorfles for a few weeks after.) I think he would have killed me if he didn't like chocolate so much. Since then, nada.
