It can be very hard to explain something to a person who is not paying attention, and then... when you call them on it... insist that they are paying attention. Some people are so fixed on their own position and are trying... desperately... to hold on to the little they know about their position... so, they cannot hear what you are saying. They are looking at you. They are nodding their head, and they are waiting for their chance to speak. To begin with... the point... whatever the point may have been... was never the important factor at any time. The important factor was the possibility for argument. Some people just like to argue.
Argument is a constant in these times. Never before (that I have seen) has there been so much contentiousness in public discourse... between friends and strangers... wherever you look. The most common response that I see... day in and day out... is; Yeah, but. It's like a mantra for our times. The reason for this is that there is an argument going on in people's heads all... day... long. Naturally... it will spill out into conversation at any time. There is no upside to it. There is no future for it, (except more of the same) and there seems to be no way to resolve it.
A long time ago, I decided to make my No mean No, and my Yes mean Yes. The only other option that exists for me is; I'll think about it. Thinking about it activates parts of The Mind to respond over time. At least that is how it works for me. I don't argue with people and it is not because I think I am right. It is easy to be both right and wrong at the same time.
