An Honest Look at Snow White - SHE WAS A POPULIST!

I've spent a lot of time with Disney's new movie, Snow White. I watched it twice and parts of it several times to catch the wording of statements being made which seemed muddled and did not even match the CC of the video I saw. Between viewings, I went back to watch the 1937 cartoon version, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, for comparison, so here is what I have to say about Snow White.

First, it seems that everyone was ready to trash this movie the moment it was released. I'm not saying it's a good movie, I'm saying it's not as bad as some would have you believe. In fact, it is a positive movie, just not very well done.

It currently has a 1.6 out of 10 rating on IMDb, up a notch since only days ago it was at 1.5. It also has 1.8K user reviews. I looked at a few and there wasn't anything good.

Rachel Zegler was a new one on me. I had never heard of her nor seen her act, but checking with IMDb, now see she did have considerable success as an actress with West Side Story and The Hunger Games. She may be a jerk when she's out talking in public or on X or wherever, but she's not as bad an actress as some would make her out to be in Snow White, for example, "she can sing but she can't act." This was the very first time I had ever watched her act in anything, and contrary to these critics, I think her acting in the part of Snow White is quite good.

Some also say that as an Hispanic (father, Polish-American -- mother, Colombian-American), she was not "white" enough for the part. But I don't know. She looked the part and, in fact, filled the part well. She was Snow White, like it or not. Is there anyone else with dark hair and a lighter complexion that you can see playing the part? I can't .

The prince, a big part of the story in both Snow White and Cinderella, was missing from this movie, as was the song, "Someday My Prince Will Come," that was featured in the 1937 cartoon film. But Jonathan, the thief, who supported Snow White's father, the missing and finally presumed dead king, became a prince, not because of his bloodline, but out of his character. You have to remember that he became a thief, a Robin Hood of sorts, to survive, because of the evil queen's tyranny which took everything from the people, and gave them nothing, you know, like what the tyrants of the world have always done and are trying to do this very day. Does "you will own nothing and you will be happy" sound familiar? Well the people of the kingdom had nothing and were not happy.

I see critics calling Snow White "woke and feminist and progressive" but they fail to give examples. They talk of a woke agenda, but I didn't see that unless it's populating a kingdom, which you would think would consist of an homogeneous group of people, and in the case of Snow White, white people, with a diverse population, instead. That's something I will fault the film for doing. Their racially mixed kingdom was faked and had no appeal. That was the real fairy tale in this story.

I didn't mind the CGI dwarfs once I got used to them. Small children might find them a bit scary when compared to the cartoon versions, but I don't know. They bore a good resemblance to their cartoon counterparts and were true to character, though they did change Dopey's name to Clumsy, possibly to not offend Democrats but just limit the offense to Biden.

The CGI animals were, however, pretty scrawny looking and could have been better. The cartoon versions of the animals looked warmer and more alive.

Oh, and the 'trendy' king, true to today's fashion where so many men don't really grow a beard but always look as if they need to shave, had very bad looking blond stubble all over his face whenever they showed a close up of him. He was supposed to be a king, not a tramp. He looked like bum wearing a crown. Come on, grow a beard, man. Well known kings and czars always have.

Getting into some of the statements made by characters in the film... When Jonathan, the thief, took a arrow to save Snow White and the dwarfs and thieves were arguing while he was dying, Snow White cut into them with:

"This is exactly the way the queen would want us to behave, fighting with each other, distrusting each other. This is how she wins. She poisoned everybody. She poisoned everyone into believing they should trust no one else. But if we renounce these miserable works, we will inherit what was meant for all of us. And it's more than we can imagine. We have to have faith in each other."

Now doesn't that sound like what Obama and Biden, and the globalists have tried to do versus what Trump is trying to do in bringing back faith in America and its people? Populism?

And Jonathan to Snow White, in another scene:

"The people had forgotten how it used to be (when Snow White's parents, the good king and queen ruled) and they despise the queen. They fear her. That's why we (Jonathan and the thieves) fight for your father. Your parents were never afraid. They made us feel braver. They filled us with hope."

Doesn't this resemble Trump's first and second terms, and what befell America between them? Populism?

And from a scene near the end where Snow White confronts the evil queen:

"There was a time we lived with hope, the good was nourished and allowed to grow. I remember," followed by others saying "I remember."

Well I grew up in 1950's America, and I remember.

People were working. New homes were being built. Television was just making its way into American homes and there were a lot of Westerns along with police and detective shows that had the good guys taking down the bad guys every night. It was "See the USA in your Chevrolet" and a host of new and improved appliances to make mom's work at home easier. When the kids came home there was someone there, and the family had their meals together. They were good, balanced meals, too, made with real food as taught in home economics classes in high schools across the country, and not pizza and Pepsi delivered to your door. Things weren't perfect, but they were certainly better than they are now, and I remember.

Kennedy was killed and the forward looking, uplifting days of Camelot and our hope for the future as seen in a popular, new president with vision -- and his young, attractive family -- came to an end. Johnson brought us the war in Vietnam and a good portion of the population became radicalized with things going downhill ever since, so that now, the middle class that Trump is trying to bring back is almost completely destroyed.

Sorry to get off on that.

Now, at the end of the film, Snow White becomes queen, and this Grimm story ends, in storybook fashion:

"Once upon a time, there was a peaceful kingdom, ruled by a virtuous queen who believed that the true beauty of the land was not in the treasures, was not measured in gems and jewels, but by the people. The queen ruled with kindness and love. She showed kindness, truth, and courage. And her name was Snow White."

I don't see Snow White as being a bad movie as much as being badly done. And if Disney was trying to get any message across to its audience, they inadvertently gave out the wrong one. I saw populism, the populism that liberals detest and stand against, alive in this film... maybe hard to find, but there.
