The World that you see is not The World that is. In the same way that shady characters hide ownership of companies and corporations behind shell companies and other constructs. The World presents itself as one thing and exists as another. The World is a patchwork quilt of fiefdoms that answer to whoever sets policy for the quilt.
You might also look at it as some kind of a large umbrella that protects those sheltered under it from magic rain that shrinks everything it lands on. You pay an entrance fee to get under the umbrella, and then you pay maintenance and assessment fees to remain there. Of course, there are other fees. Let us say that you want to be closer to the support rod that holds the umbrella upright. You have to pay club dues to be among those who huddle together at the center of the atmospheric murk that determines the living conditions there.
I call it murk because you can’t see or think clearly when you are in that location. People who are driven by the desire to possess are reflexively possessed by the spirit of the desire, which is a demon (on one level and an angelic presence on another)… and so defined because of its area of operations at the material level. It might be a club with an exclusive membership that you are not part of, as Carlin pointed out, but it also involves the surrender of your soul as the price of admission. You could say the members of that club are damned because damnation comes as the cost of the perks you receive.
