I wanted to post an article here a while back, but by the time it would materialize, RMN was hacked and all posts gone. It is a quite lengthy writing about 10 pages long. It got me thinking whether it would be wiser to upload the article to a website, just in case things get deleted again. Then I could just post the links to it, which can be easily replaced when necessary. But to do that, some more articles will be needed, because to create a single page site would be a waste of effort… So, finally I ended up like the yogi in a parable often cited in yogic circles )) For those who haven’t heard the story, it goes like this:
A yogi was instructed by his guru to retreat to the woods and meditate all day long. His guru told him to take nothing with him. But the yogi still took a loincloth with him, just in case he needs to go to the village begging food. One night a mouse chewed a hole into the loincloth and he was dejected. He could not meditate properly, because he worried constantly about his loincloth being further eaten up by the mouse.
Someone came by and hearing his story recommended him to get a cat to keep the mice away. He got a cat, and his loin cloth was now safe, he could meditate all day long without worrying about worldly things. But he soon realized that the cat can not live exclusively eating mouse, so he needed to get milk for the cat. He arranged with some of his devotees in the village to bring milk for the cat daily. This sorted the problem for a while, until his devotees tired fetching milk every day, because they had to walk a long distance from the village and back.
Therefore they brought a cow to the yogi so that the he could milk her himself. The yogi was not very happy about the extra chore, but he didn’t want to bother the people, and he agreed. Because this was a dry part of India there was not much grass around. The cow had to be tied to a pole and the yogi had to cut grass for her from a large area. The yogi now realized that he was spending half his days cutting grass. He was disappointed, because he had much less time for meditation which was the sole purpose of him being there.
When next time the villagers came to visit and heard about the problem, they arranged that a worker should come and cut the grass for the cow. This again solved the problem for the time being, but the worker soon got lazy, since he got very little payment, and started neglecting his duty. The cow was not fed properly, giving little milk, and the cat was not catching the mouse diligently. When he spoke to the villagers again about the new problems, they came up with a final solution. They said:
“We will solve the whole problem once and for all, it's simple. There is a nice girl in the village, ready for marriage; just marry her, she'll manage everything. She will make sure that the man cutting the grass doesn’t neglect his job, and she will also look after the cow, cat, and you. You will have no trouble anymore; you may then get on with your meditation.”
So, of course he agreed.
Five years later his guru came to see how he was getting on with his meditation under his
tree. He found a large farmstead with lots of cows and goats, and all sorts of things; the wife of
course and a number of children. The poor old ex-yogi looking very disturbed was busy tending to the entire household business.
His guru said 'how come you are in such a bad situation? I left you just sitting under a tree, meditating, with just a couple of loin cloths. He said “Yes, that's what it is all about! All this, just for the sake of the loin cloth...”
Hahahaha… so far the parable. So, now I got myself involved into much more than I originally intended to accomplish. Anyway, the article I wanted to post is still not on the website, but there are two introductory articles there for those seekers of truth. Here are the links:
