Here's a truly individual and unique opportunity to demonstrate what you would teach your children and grandchildren.

Tomorrow, the town in which I live joins with that very small number of communities in this country to overcome the gap that the 4th of July just doesn't get.

As Lynda says, it isn't just about family and fun.

So here in my home town, we are one of the less than 50 communities across the country that does what she implies but doesn't quite say.

READ THE DECLARATIOH OF INDEPENDENCE ALOUD, IN PUBLIC, like it was done in 1776, and for several score years later.

Before the erosion set in with less reading, but more fireworks. Get the picture? See the problem? What are 'they' going to do about that? You know the answer to that!

Nada. Yep, you got that right!

There is an answer for that. Easy. You can do it.

Let me say that again. YOU CAN DO IT.

Read the Declaration of Independence yourself. Out loud. Tomorrow. Read it aloud. To others. You pick the place. A nearby public park? A nearby street corner?

Read it aloud. To whoever is there in front of you. Even if only two or three of your friends, or family, or neighbors, or ... get the idea?

The point is DO IT, don't just expect some one to blast it on your TV or computer for you to take it in. Even that wedged between a few commercials from 'our sponsor' of course.

You ARE the sponsor!

So what if there's 'only' a couple of people in front of you? That's more than zero, right?

Doing it tomorrow proves to you that YOU can do it. You don't need a permit, you don't need permission, you just need to DO IT.

And then, next year, post a few signs some days in advance as to where and when you will be doing it in 2019.

They will come.

And some make a point of driving a hundred miles or so because that's what we do here and its not being done wherever they come from.

Where I live, after about the dozen or more years, it's now a part of the Town's celebration. Right after the Flag Raising, and a few remarks from town officials, the early celebrants gathered for that move to a shaded area for the READING itself. After the Reading, there is public comment, discussion, and an awareness that this is about something more than flag raising, picnics, fun and games, but really about WHO WE ARE, as Americans.

Not democrats, not republicans, not libertarians, not independents, not politicians, not voters, not immigrants, not famous people, not police, not firemen, not public 'servants', not citizens, not veterans, not cripples, not, not, not......

It is about people. WE THE PEOPLE. Remember that phrase?

When you step out with the Declaration in your hand and begin to read it out where you are so others can hear it, you have reinstated WE THE PEOPLE.

Welcome aboard. First, tomorrow. And look forward to doing it again and better next year!
