I love the way that squash looks in the fall ... sitting among the all the leaves looking at us saying, "Okay - we're just about done for this year!" Such a satisfyingly complete scene. It's good to let them sit out there for a while too, isn't it? Don't forget, even if you have some green tomatoes, if you put them top(stem) down in a cloth in a basket with other tomatoes of varying stages of ripeness, and they'll ripen. You can even cut the whole plant and hang it upside down in the basement and they'll ripen ... but the leaves are messy.

A Wallipinis one of these days would be wonderful! My ultimate dream is an attached pit (basement) level green house that I can walk into during the winter - it would really lighten the long winter haul up here - but at this point I'd be happy with a small real garden. I really can't complain about my current lakeside home - over the weekend I saw a white heron for the first time in my life. There are always the Great Blue around here, and they were on the river at my childhood country home too, but I'd never even heard of Great White Herons! Now I have to hope that I am lucky enough to take a picture of one. It's really something to see a white heron floating by the window beyond my computer screen!
