Pavlov's Puppies.
Most people are aware that Pavlov pioneered reflexive conditioning.
Few are aware that he actually pioneered mind transference by meme.
The principle of mind transference by meme has been practiced for thousands of years. As societies and cultures change the principal has to be re-pioneered to serve management of the changes. It is not an accident that Pavlov's research occurred just prior to mass travel and mass communication and massive populations.
On one level the ringing bell represents the physical, material expression of the meme. The meme is food, satisfaction, pleasure.
On a deeper level the ringing bell represents the transference of Pavlov's mind, meaning will, expectations and authority, into the minds of the dogs. (By mind I mean the ethereal, spiritual mind and not the biological interface organ, commonly called the brain, which is almost always mistaken for mind.) Pavlov's mind assumes a specific control of the dogs under specific circumstances. They have his mind.
The dogs are literally possessed by the mind of Pavlov through the physical, material presentation of the ringing bell meme. They react precisely as Pavlov would have them react with anticipation of food, satisfaction and pleasure. They have no choice.
The possession of Pavlov's mind, by the dogs, could be modified many ways and to many degrees depending on desired performance. That the dogs possess Pavlov's mind is evidenced by the fact that it does not matter who presents the ringing bell meme. The dogs will react appropriately. They have no choice.
Memes can range from insignificant to as omnipotent as any all powerful god. Throughout history the meme has been deployed with god like effect.
Pandemic simply means wide spread and nothing more. Pandemic is neither good or bad. Modifiers must be employed to establish the context. Birth days and death days are pandemic as are ingrown toe nails, haircuts, accidents, illnesses, weddings, divorces, attending church, visiting friends and a host of other things. The word pandemic does not mean or imply any of these things. Pandemic does not imply anything at all. It simply means wide spread.
Epidemic means common and nothing more. It is neither good or bad. Cell phone use is epidemic as is bathing, cooking, buying groceries, working, watching the news, going to school and a host of other things that are common. When nutrition and sanitation are introduced to primitive places better health becomes epidemic. The word means common and nothing more.
There is no factual division between pandemic and epidemic. There is only your judgement and someone else's judgement and your acceptance of one or the other.
The word pandemic has been meme-orized. Fear, uncertainty, death, suffering, dis-ease, penalty for failure to obey rules, "experts" are correct, I am non-essential, believe, excitement, drama and more have been attached to a neutral word to form the meme. Epidemic is a subset in and under pandemic and has similar modifiers attached. When the meme is internalized the mind of the meme creator rules over the infected individual under certain, specific circumstances. The individual does not own himself under those circumstances. He is literally possessed by the mind of the meme creator. He has no choice in the matter. He is not his own.
The "my mind" of the meme creator is transferred into the mind of the subject and controls the subject. The "me" of the creator becomes the "me" of the subject. Me-me. Meme. Meme-orized.
The test is simple. If the neutral words pandemic or epidemic cause you to experience any of the modifiers attached to the meme then you are one of Pavlov's puppies to the extent that you experience the modifiers.
The remedy is equally simple. If the shoe fits then it is your shoe. Owning that shoe, instead of being owned by it, is the first step to ascending from puppy to ownership of self.
Much has been said about a thing called the Matrix. The meme is the core of the Matrix.
If you goggle "The power of the meme" you can read for a long time.
There is also a deep esoteric, spiritual aspect to the meme. Maybe later.
