Well, the planets and the sun all have bow shock waves so there is some type of atmosphere, however thin.

If you view a planet or a star as a spherical conductor (a short circuit) with a standing charge and isolated in a partial vacuum then atmosphere retention might be ionized gasses held in place by the electro-static-magnetic field generated by the planetary standing charge and not so much by gravity.
